MTM Pharmacy Degree Overview

A Groundbreaking Approach to Patient Care

The University of Florida’s College of Pharmacy, a leader in pharmacy education offers an online Master of Science in Pharmacy with a concentration in Medication Therapy Management. This premier program is designed for working professionals. With classes delivered in an entirely online and flexible format, you can graduate in as few as 18 months while maintaining your current career and income.

Medication Therapy Management (MTM) focuses on the safe and effective use of medications and the high-level knowledge required to help patients achieve intended pharmacotherapy outcomes. MTM is an emerging area of pharmacy practice and has recently become a billable service for some Medicare Part D and Medicaid recipients. Because of this, the field of MTM represents a new frontier for pharmacists looking to expand their practice and deliver better patient care.

The online Master’s in Medication Therapy Management is the first and only program of its kind. Designed to prepare you with the practical skills you can use to incorporate Medication Therapy Management into your current pharmacy career or establish your own MTM practice and run the business behind it.

The program begins with two foundations courses that cover the core elements of MTM practice and the business aspects of implementing MTM into your practice. In the first term you will be required to attend a four-day, on-campus session at the University of Florida’s MTM Institute. The MTM Institute is designed to introduce you to the program and the practice of medication therapy management. This session focuses on hands-on practice, communication skills, and physical examination techniques.

After your foundation courses and the MTM Institute, you will take eight courses that focus on the exploration of medication therapy as it relates to the different body system areas of pharmaceutical care. As part of each of your body system courses, you will study patient care, documentation, medication safety, geriatric patient care, patient and provider communication, business models for MTM practices, billing, reimbursement and regulatory aspects of MTM.

As a student, you will learn new information that can be applied immediately to help improve your practice or lead your organization in the implementation of MTM services.

I currently have a BS in Chemistry and Biology as well as a MS in Biology. Do you have any online programs that would allow me to work on obtaining Pharmacy Degree?

    Thanks!

Hello and thank you for your question. Unfortunately, our program is only available for licensed pharmacists. It is likely that you will need to pursue a traditional on-campus program.

    Hello,

I am currently a pharmacy student at a CCAPP accredited pharmacy college in Qatar. I will graduate and acquire my BSc (Pharm) in 2013. and I was wondering if after that I can continue to get a PharmD or MTM degree with you.

    Thank you,

    • mgil says:

Unfortunately, if you received your BS of Pharmacy degree from outside the US or Canada and you are not currently licensed in the US as well as Canada, you would not be eligible to apply to the program. You must also be licensed in the US to apply.

I’m a licensed Canadian Pharmacist. Would I be eligible for the program?

  5. CK says:

Good day- If I currently have a PharmD/MBA-do I still have to take the GRE? Thanks

    • mgil says:

If you currently have a Pharm D or Masters degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, you will not be asked to take the GRE to apply to the Masters in Medication Therapy Management program.

  6. CK says:

If I am a recent PharmD, what is the added benefit of the this Masters in MTM- or is there much benefit?. Would’nt this degree/educational objectives be identical to components covered in the PharmD curriculum?

Is this program mostly geared primarily for Pharm BS degree holders ?

    • mgil says:

      Hi CK,
This program is geared toward pharmacists who hold either their PharmD or BS Pharm degree and while there will certainly be some overlap in course study, it will be minor as the MTM objectives are not identical to the curriculum covered in the PharmD. We would be happy to discuss the program curriculum with you. Please contact an Enrollment Advisor at (800)431-6687.

  7. Christina says:

Hi there, I am currently getting my prerequisits done so that I can attend Regus University’s Doctorate of Pharmacy program by fall 2014. This MTM program sounds very interesting! Is this mainly for people who are already pharmacist who want to open there own medication consulting office (type-of-thing). I would love to be ale to consult patients as a pharmacist, and run my own office and pharmacy. I guess I need more info, and I guess I thought with a doctorate of pharmacy, I would already be ale to consult patients directly and have my own office? Thanks!!

    • mgil says:

      Hi Christina,

Thank you for your question. Yes, the program is only for students who are already Pharmacists. While some MTM material is taught during the PharmD program, the Master’s in MTM prepares pharmacists for an advanced level of practice that involves practice based care and medication therapy management. The program covers the chronic disease states most commonly encountered in a MTM setting and the business side of MTM such as billing, reimbursement and regulatory considerations. In short, the MS MTM focuses on the business side of MTM as well as advanced pharmacotherapeutics.
